Sheepskin seat covers are an excellent choice for your car. They are hypoallergenic, keep you warm in winter, cool in summer, and offer your seats great protection. They are comfortable and soft to sit in as well. The other great reason to use sheepskin automobile seat covers is that they are washable, so you can easily keep them clean! Here are some guidelines for keeping your sheepskin car seat covers clean.
To maintain your sheepskin covers looks, there are some simple maintenance steps you can take. To begin with, it is imperative to vacuum them once per month. After they are vacuumed, use a sheepskin care brush to brush out the wool. Sheepskin care brushes are also called slicker brushes or wool cards. Coarser brushes achieve better results.
If you notice the wool pile is out of form, then you will want to brush them out to get them looking their best again. You also may want to occasionally remove the covers and just shake them to get any loose dirt out.
It is of the utmost importance that you do not choose a detergent that will discolor or harm your sheepskin seat covers. Do not purchase detergents that contain bleach, alkalis, washing enzymes, or peroxide. Woolskin shampoo products are the best thing to use, although ivory soap or baby shampoo can get the job done in a pinch but do not use Woolite as it will dry out the hide. Be sure to spot test anything you use to ensure it will not ruin your sheepskin.
Once you have the right detergent, you can wash your covers. You only need to wash your covers when there is a stain of some sort or something sticky has gotten on the sheepskin. If there is a small spot, you can spot wash.
To spot wash your covers use a sponge with cold water to dampen the dirty spot on the sheepskin. Be sure not to use hot water, as hot water will cause shrinkage and damage to the fleece.
Once the sheepskin has been dampened, you can use a washcloth to rub in the detergent. Then, use the damp sponge to wipe out the detergent. Use your sheepskin brush to brush it out, then lay it flat indoors to dry. Do not let it dry in the sun, as it can cause damage.
If your entire seat cover needs washing, you will need to hand wash them in cold water. Use detergent in cold water, then submerge the seat cover and wash it. Use cold water to thoroughly rinse your sheepskin cover. Let the cover dry naturally indoors, occasionally stretching out the skin to ensure it does not shrink. Reinstall the seat cover when it is about 90% dry to prevent shrinking. Once dry, use the sheepskin brush to restore the fleece to its normal look.
